Aipan is one of the traditional art of Kumaon, Uttarakhand. It has great social, cultural and religious significance. It is a ritualistic folk art which was created and practised solely by women up until commercialization of the artform, the knowledge passed on from mothers to daughters. It is drawn to commemorate auspicious occasions, festivals and even rituals performed during the death of a person. The art form is also known to offer protection against evil. The art form is made on the floors and walls of the houses and uses mostly geometrical, floral linear designs.
