Dot Painting

Dot Painting is a traditional Aboriginal art form originating from Indigenous communities of Australia. It involves the use of countless tiny dots to create symbolic, layered compositions that often hold deep cultural, spiritual, and ancestral meaning. Originally used in sand drawings, rock engravings, and body art, this technique evolved into canvas art in the 1970s as a way to preserve and share sacred stories. While visually mesmerizing, Dot Painting is not merely decorative—it is a sacred form of storytelling where certain meanings are kept hidden, known only to the initiated. Today, while contemporary artists continue to innovate within the style, the essence of Dot Painting remains a powerful link to identity, land, and tradition for Aboriginal communities, so as urban artists we do not recreate their original versions as they are considered sacred, we merely make inspired versions.
