Saura Art
Saura art is a tribal wall painting tradition practiced by the Saura tribe of Odisha. Deeply spiritual in nature, this art form is traditionally created to mark auspicious occasions, seasonal rituals, harvests, marriages, or births. It serves both decorative and devotional purposes.
The artwork features a unique set of motifs known as ikon, representing deities, ancestors, and elements of daily life. Human and animal figures are stylized with triangular bodies and stick-like limbs, arranged in dynamic, storytelling compositions.
Traditionally drawn on the walls of mud houses using natural dyes and brushes made from twigs, Saura art is known for its symmetry, repetition, and narrative depth. Though visually similar to Warli at first glance, Saura has its own distinct iconography and cultural roots, often carrying mythological or protective meanings passed down through generations.
