Warli Art

Warli art is a tribal art form practiced by the Warli community of Maharashtra, primarily in the regions near the Western Ghats. Known for its minimalistic beauty, Warli painting is traditionally done using white pigment made from rice paste on mud and cow dung-coated walls.

The art form employs basic geometric shapes—circles, triangles, and squares—to depict scenes of daily life, farming, hunting, festivals, and rituals. Human and animal figures are usually drawn in a rhythmic pattern, creating a sense of movement and storytelling.

Warli art is deeply connected to nature and social life, with many paintings centered around the chaukat, a square representing sacred space. Although simple in form, the art is rich in meaning and reflects the community’s harmonious relationship with the environment.

Once limited to walls during specific ceremonies, Warli art has now expanded onto paper, fabric, and canvas, gaining global recognition while preserving its tribal essence.
